Stir TV

This week, we continue to A-Profile the Stir TV hosts, the show for and about Asian America's next generation. In our final week of profiling the Stir Stars, we profile Tony Wang. Born in Taiwan and raised in San Francisco, Tony is a graduate of Harvard Law School who continues to supplement his career in law with his interest in Asian Americans in the arts. Though he still works as a corporate lawyer, when he's out of the office he plays guitar and drums, competes in marathons and triathlons, and is an avid surfer. As active as he is, the laid-back Tony says that his primary objective each day is to "take a nice nap without drooling too much."

Tony WangTell us a little about yourself:
I was born in Taiwan and have one older sister who is now a mother of an adorable three year old named Wesley. I grew up in the Bay Area, went to Cal for college and Harvard for law school. Growing up, I was never that good at science, so naturally, being Asian and since I wouldn't make a very good doctor, I became a lawyer. My dad still gives me grief for not becoming a doctor, but I notice it's usually not around the time he wants me to review his contracts. I grew up in a restaurant family, so I really like Asian food, all kinds, Korean, Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc. Actually, what am I talking about, I like food in general. As for music, I really don't have any favorites since I love a bunch a different kinds from jazz to traditional Hawaiian, but in the car I find myself listening to a lot of Green Day, MXPX and Good Charlotte. Oh yeah, and also the Police (the band, not the sirens), they rock. I remember my first real full time job out of high school was as a U.S. census enumerator. I walked around in my goofy suit with a plastic red-white-and-blue attache around my back and got doors closed on me left and right. It was pretty demoralizing.

How does it feel to know that you beat out over 300 candidates to host "Stir?"
I really don't consider myself "beating" out other people for this hosting position. The truth is, there is so much talent in the Asian American community, and everyone brings something different to the table. There's always reasons one person gets picked over another, but it rarely has to do with how talented someone is. In my case, I guess it helped to pay off the producers. I just feel extremely blessed to have this opportunity to be part of a show for and about Asian Americans, it's about time something like this happened, and to be working with all the really incredible people behind this project.

How has the schedule for rehearsals, interviews, tapings, and meetings been like?
Our shooting schedule has been pretty busy since early this year, and paired up with our marketing events for the show launch, it was pretty packed, but also exciting. I think now our shooting schedule should start to settle into a more consistent pace. At least I hope because I'm beginning to miss sleeping.

Tony WangWhat attracted you to corporate law?
Hmmm, I have a lot of jokes I can make about this, but when it comes down to it, I find that my corporate law job is actually intellectually challenging and never monotonous. Nothing ever happens the same way, which is both a good and bad thing, but it keeps you engaged and on your toes.

Are you politically active? What political party do you belong to?
This is also a tough question, because I find that the predictions of my high school history teacher is beginning to come true, that I'd get more conservative as I grow older, but having grown up in San Francisco, I think that still places me left of center somewhere.

How did you get started competing in marathons and triathlons? How do you train for these events?
Let me first say that I'm a total poser, and I definitely don't come in anywhere near the top of my age bracket, especially since I'm in the most competitive age division now. But I do like to run and go mountain biking and generally be outdoors. And after the end of a really long day at work, I really look forward to doing laps in the outdoor pool at night. It's very therapeutic. Entering into races came in as an afterthought since I already enjoy each of the tri legs and I like pushing myself and seeing how far I can go.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now? 10 years?
I'd love to spend more time in Asia, maybe try to get work out there, continue to learn the language, travel. I hope my body keeps up because I'd like to still be running and surfing. Oh yeah, somewhere in there to have a wife and some scrappy kids along the way too. How cute would that be?

Are you single? Or do you have a significant other?
Single.
